If you have experienced something horrible and have developed symptoms such as sleep problems, fears, sadness, powerlessness, or flashback, you may well be helped by EMDR.
What is EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a proven and effective intervention used to help individuals to heal from disturbing symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, complicated grief, relational issues and more. EMDR can help you heal faster and permanently reduce the impacts of the traumatic event.
EMDR therapy involves activating parts of the disturbing life event or traumatic memory and pairing those parts with back-and-forth bilateral or dual attention stimulation. This process helps resume the normal information processing and integration. The disturbing image will become blurred and lose its emotional charge. When the emotional charge of an image lessens, it’s easier to think differently about the experience. You will feel less powerless, anxious or depressed, and you will sleep better and feel worthwhile again.
EMDR consists of 8 phases that address past disturbing life events and present triggers of the symptoms:
Phase 1: History Taking
Phase 2: Preparation
Phase 3: Assessment of presenting issues
Phase 4: Desensitization
Phase 5: Installation of positive cognition
Phase 6: Body Scan
Phase 7: Closure
Phase 8: Re-evaluation
